Welcome to Our Parish School
The school was established in 1976 on the grounds of the beautiful Mission San Luis Rey Parish in Oceanside, California, to provide a Catholic-Montessori education for children of varied social, economic and ethnic backgrounds. Our school provides a nurturing learning environment which encourages independence and creativity.
Old Mission Montessori School promotes the appreciation for human differences, and helps children become effective decision makers.
OMMS is a carefully prepared educational environment which exposes the children to manipulative materials and experiences, developing intellectual and physical abilities, while promoting the spiritual and psychological growth of the child.
The Montessori Method of Education is a unique approach to learning. Children learn through an environment that is carefully designed and prepared by the teacher. The teacher's role in the Montessori classroom is to guide and instruct the children in the Montessori Curriculum. Children work independently as well as in small groups to stimulate their interest and learning. The Montessori teacher works to challenge the child's natural curiosity and facilitate a better understanding of the world.
The Montessori classroom is typically comprised of mixed-age groups, which offers multiple benefits to children. In a Montessori sytem, children progress at their own pace without the grade level stigma. Younger children learn from the older children, who are given the opportunity to further their subject mastery, by modeling and mentoring the younger children.
Montessori children outperform their peers academically, cognitively, and socially.
